About Us
The Institute for Prehistory, Early History and Near Eastern Archaeology is characterised by a broad spectrum of study and research. It brings together two distinct disciplines, comprising a total of three professorships, and combines cross-period perspectives with methodological diversity and cultural-theoretical approaches. Thanks to its affiliation with the Centre for Classical Studies (ZAW), it also maintains extensive links with other archaeological disciplines at the University of Heidelberg.

History of the Institute
The history of what is now the Institute for Prehistory, Early History and Near Eastern Archaeology at Heidelberg University is inextricably linked not only to academic developments but also to the political upheavals of the 20th century. We see it as our duty to openly acknowledge and address this history – including its darker chapters – and to provide you with a comprehensive overview of the origins of our institute.
