Until 2017, the Institute for Protohistory, Prehistory and Near Eastern Archaeology was housed in the college building south of the Marstall, the armoury (1507–1544) built by Elector Ludwig V on the north-western corner of the medieval city walls, remnants of which can still be seen in parts of the outer walls of the Heuscheuer. 

On the south side of the Marstall stood a Renaissance building, originally erected by Elector Johann Casimir, which was destroyed during the War of the Orléans (War of the Palatinate Succession) in 1693. It was replaced between 1806 and 1808 by the neoclassical ‘Weinbrennerbau’, which in turn had to make way for the new college building in the Marstallhof (1963–1972). The dark, block-like building with a flat roof is easily identifiable amongst the historic buildings.

Due to the extensive refurbishment of the college building on the Marstallhof, which has been ongoing since 2017, the core of the Institute (library and offices) had to be temporarily relocated to Sandgasse 7. The return to the college building is scheduled for after the completion of the building works (around 2027/2028).
